Happy February!! This year January has been or seemed to me as a super long month… and quite intense too… but here we are, in February again! I just can’t help but love February. It’s short, there’s my birthday, we celebrate love and as la Candelera has “cried” (Catalan class for you… si la Candelera plora, l’hivern ja és fora, si la Candelera riu, l’hivern encara és ben viu), it seems that spring is on its way…so what’s not to love? Let’s see which are my February favorite flowers!

This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. I know that we do have Sant Jordi here, as the main lover’s festivity in Catalonia, but… who says we can’t celebrate twice?

There’s evidence that fresh flowers can have a real impact on our wellbeing, mood and even memory, so this year for Valentine’s Day, let’s spread love and care.

It’s very early in the season, but we already can offer you potted bulbs with hyacinths, irises, narcissi, freesia but we can also start offering fresh flowers that will fill your home with their floral perfume and feel-good vibes.

This week’s favourites

Some of my february favorite flowers these weeks are Mimosa, narcissi and the blossom branches, they’re fragrant, the color and sensation is like new beginnings, kind of spring is on its way, but if you feel like more elegant, dramatic effect flowers, we also have the hellebores, we’re picking the first anemones and I’ve been surprised by the first white tulips. In a couple of weeks, we’ll have them happily available.

Also, there’s another way of spreading the love and making it last longer… as you can gift one of our CSA flower subscriptions, which will bring joy for many weeks. Flower Club

Pick of the flowers – Mimosa

How do you care for mimosa bouquets?

Always remember to change your mimosa’s water regularly and keep them in a cool area, away from direct sunlight or draughts. If you follow all the above, your fresh mimosa stems should shine for a full 3-4 days. However, if you boil some water and place the stems on it and let it cool there, you can get as much as 7 days of your mimosa. The water will turn orangey-brown but don’t worry, it’s normal! And that is not all! After this, you can preserve your mimosa by drying it. Just leave it in the vase with just 1cm of water and let it evaporate. Et voilà, there you have it dried!

A recipe with flowers to take care of ourselves:

Oil infused with calendula petals

Pour the oil you like best or have (jojoba, sweet almonds, coconut, olive…) over the dried marigold petals (1 part dried grass to 2 parts oil) make sure to cover the petals well. Secure the lid and let the petals infuse at room temperature for 46 weeks. After this time, strain the oil to remove the petals and we will have it. Perfect for taking care of our skin, for massages,

A bouquet to share:

Get creative with flowers!

Look for a little mason jar, jam jar, vase, milk jug or whatever you have around that can contain water. Now it’s time to go outside and look for whatever is around, color, flowers, branches, anything that catches your eye (of course if it’s in somebody else’s property, always ask for permission). You can also buy some flowers on the supermarket, florist, farmer’s market or even better, to us (my fav option) . Now it’s time to arrange them, just being present, enjoying the moment. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it will make you feel connected, and you’ll feel prouder, happier and it’s an instant mood enhancer, so… win win! If you feel like sharing it, please do so. I’ll give a free bunch of flowers to one of them, randomly chosen, just by sharing, so not to worry we’re no judges here. Are you in?

I have been thinking lately that I’d like to start a community where we can support small, local businesses around us. Any recommendations? Any particular interest?

And just to end this first newsletter, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite things in February… the open fire is a constant source of comfort and inspiration at home, the warmth, the colors, the smell, the sound… also the long walks with Nala when the sun is out, and of course picking the first flowers of the season. These are a few of my favorite things.

Love,

Susanna
